HR Process Alignment
Strategic re-alignment of Learning and Development for Rockwool

Focusing Learning and Development (L&D) on improving business results requires a strong link to the business strategy. Pipsy undertook a project at Rockwool to align the L&D strategy to Rockwool’s People Agenda and business strategy.

Rockwool, a building supplies and solutions provider, has 11,000 employees around the globe and faces an increasingly competitive market. Further expansion for Rockwool depends on developing internal talent who understand Rockwool’s unique processes and can take them to new markets. L&D has an important role in supporting Rockwool’s plans to develop internal talent, improve customer focus and become a more agile organisation while retaining its market leadership position.

The L&D project consisted of four parts:

  1. Review of current state of L&D in Rockwool
  2. Benchmarking with best practice to identify potential desired state
  3. Gap analysis between current and desired state with prioritisation linked to the strategy
  4. Definition of a new L&D strategy, 3 year plan and learning programme

The changes focused on three areas: L&D strategy, delivery and access.

Firstly the new L&D strategy focused on working towards a continuous learning culture where everyone (managers, employees and HR) all take responsibility for defining learning, creating learning opportunities, in and outside the classroom, and ensuring learning is applied back on job.

Secondly changing delivery of L&D to ensure that it is more effective, efficient and value for money. Many of the current face-to-face courses will be moved to blended learning, with expected improvement in application of learning back to the workplace. Thirdly broadening the access and opportunities by implementing a train-the-trainer programme, global preferred supplier arrangements and developing the coaching skills of line managers.

Rockwool now have a clear, pragmatic plan for aligning and improving L&D over next 3 years to support Rockwool’s business strategy.
